Men’s Mental Health: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
Jun 15, 2025
For years, I thought the best way to deal with tough feelings was to keep my head down and power through. Like a lot of men, I believed if I just stayed busy, the anxiety and exhaustion would eventually fade. But the harder I tried to ignore what was going on inside, the worse things got. I became more anxious, more withdrawn, and lost touch with what mattered most.
It wasn’t until I started to really pay attention to the warning signs that things began to change.
Why Men’s Mental Health Matters
Men’s mental health often goes undiscussed, but the warning signs are there if you know what to look for. Ignoring them can lead to serious issues like depression, burnout, or crisis. Recognising these early signs is the first step toward getting the support you need.
Common Warning Signs in Men
- Struggling to get out of bed even after a full night’s sleep
- Loss of interest in hobbies or activities you once enjoyed
- Irritability, anger, or snapping at people
- Feeling flat, numb, or disconnected from those around you
- Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy levels
- Constant fatigue or trouble concentrating
- Neglecting appearance or hygiene
- Withdrawing from mates and family
- Feelings of hopelessness or being a burden
If you’re noticing these signs in yourself, it’s important to know you’re not alone. These symptoms are common for men experiencing depression, anxiety, or high stress.
My Experience: Breaking the Cycle
I tried to ignore these feelings, thinking they’d go away if I just kept busy. But that only made things worse. It wasn’t until I recognised the signs—fatigue, irritability, trouble focusing, and pulling away from loved ones—that I realised I needed to make real changes.
Practical Steps to Improve Your Mental Health
- Set Clear, Achievable Goals
When everything feels overwhelming, break big problems into small, manageable steps. For me, making my bed daily, setting a morning routine, and learning a new skill each month helped restore my confidence and sense of control. Don’t try to fix everything at once—focus on one thing at a time. Progress might be slow, but every small win counts. - Prioritise Your Physical Health
When life gets hectic, physical health often takes a backseat. I started small: daily walks, eating proper meals, and making sure I got enough sleep. Regular movement—whether it’s running, lifting weights, or just getting outside—boosts both physical and mental health. Aim to move every couple of days for at least 30-60 minutes. Your mind and body are connected; caring for one helps the other. - Reach Out for Support
You don’t have to do this alone. Many men find that working with a counsellor accelerates their recovery and helps them develop a more positive outlook. Reaching out takes courage, but it’s the first step toward building a life that inspires you.
